August 2016 "Finish It!" Design Challenge

Long time no “Finish It!” tutorial contest, right? So it's time to rectify that. Here you’ll find all you need to know about the contest and rules, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the comments below, or email me at the address provided later in the rules.
The purpose of the"Finish It!" challenge is to encourage the participants to extend themselves, their talents and creativity, beyond the limitations of a single set of instructions and create pieces uniquely their own. Each contest has resulted in a wealth of beautiful and original artistic expressions, and I expect this one will produce no less the amount of brilliance. You have all amazed me with, not only your exuberance and enthusiasm, but your results as well, and I’m excited to see what this contest will inspire within you. Here’s the gist: At the bottom of this post is a link to a tutorial only 9 pages long, and ending abruptly halfway through the instruction. Your job is to create a piece beginning with the steps, as explained in the file, but ending with your own imagination! And blowing my mind... that's part of your job too. And you can do it, because it's been done every single time I've held one of these contests. If you are in doubt... just you wait... you'll surprise yourself.

Contest Rules

  • To assure fairness, only one element from the “Materials & Tools” list (provided in the tutorial) may be changed, and anything may be omitted entirely that isn't used in the provided instruction. The size of the stone can change, for instance, but lengths and gauges of wire may not. Gauge of wires may change, but lengths and size of stone may not. You can change from a bead to a cabochon, but only if they are the same size, and other materials may not be changed as a result. Tools not listed may not be used at all, except when soldering a closed jump ring, and the solder may not be used in any other part of the piece. Jump rings are a minor material and gauges, size or style of jump ring may be changed without effecting your one allowed material change. Oxidizing materials and tumblers may be used, as they do not directly influence the size and shape of the finished design.
  • When a piece is completed to his or her satisfaction, the contestant is asked to submit a single photo of a single finished piece via email, to nikki.hanna@gmail.com. Please title this email “Contest Entry”. No compilation photos. One single clear photo is requested. The completed project may be photographed on a chain, if desired, and on any display. Please save the image file as "your name" only and send as an attachment (not embedded in the email).  Following these submission guidelines assures your entry is not missed! The deadline for this submission is August 22, 11:59 pm (US Eastern). Note: Photoscape and Picasa are both free programs suitable for image resizing and photo editing. Photo editing apps for smart phones and tablets, such as "Resize Me!", can be used as well.
  • On August 23, an album will be created on Pinterest containing the submitted entries, then put to vote before all participants. Note: By submitting an entry to the August 2015 “Finish it!” Tutorial Contest, you are granting Nicole Hanna permission to display your image online for the purposes of promoting or running this contest.
  • The participants will vote for “Group Favorite”, by commenting on their favorite entry (only one), with all votes submitted between August 23 and Midnight August 31. If you do not have a Pinterest account, or (for any reason) cannot comment on the entries, please submit your vote to nikki.hanna@gmail.com and I will comment on your behalf.
  • Votes will be tallied and winner announced September 1.

“Group Favorite” will win my completed version of this project and any ten tutorials of their choice.

A “Judged Favorite”, chosen by a panel of four jewelry artists and three “consumers” (who are not participating in the contest), will also receive any ten tutorials of their choice.

Every contestant will receive the finished version of this tutorial simply for participating. This tutorial will arrive as a reply to your submission email, so check your spam folder if you do not receive it by the end of August. Also, be sure your email host will accept incoming attachments. I've had many emails rejected (especially from AOL and hotmail accounts) because the mail box was full, or security settings do not allow attachments.

Happy weaving everyone, and I hope you have fun!

Note: Please access this file via a laptop or desktop computer. Some mobile devices are uncooperative with PDF downloads (I'm looking at you, iPad!), and I may not be able to address requests for manual email delivery of this file in a timely manner (thus using up your submission time).

Good luck everyone and happy weaving!

Nicole

It's been a while, hasn't it? I'm looking forward to it, and am hoping to do another one in October or November as well.

You mention photo editing software for resizing...what is your preferred photo size for the photo submitted?

Oh! I forgot that was in there. Size doesn't matter. Usually, when I host the images on my website, I like them smaller in size, but they'll all be on Pinterest, so any size is fine :D

Yay! Last year's entry popped up on my memory newsfeed today and made me wonder when this year's would be announced - and here it is! Can't wait to get started. Thanks Nicole xx

When changing the one item, can the shape of the bead be changed? Example replace 25MM Oval bead with 25MM Round?

Thanks!

1. Can the (6) base wires be cut and repositioned?
2.

The included tutorial steps have to be completed as shown, although you can change out wire sizes as your one change if you like)

Sorry, I meant after the first 21 steps.

Yep, after those included steps, you can change lengths and cut wires and do all that good stuff. :D

Hmm, rules, rules, rules, Nicole! Question: I'm currently thinking of making an experimental piece to enter for the contest to see how it turns out, but one of the rules is slightly ambiguous to me - it says that gauges of wire may change, [but lengths and size of stone may not.] - does that mean all gauges of wires can be changed, or the gauge of just one kind of wire? (Wrapping or base.)

I've pretty much finished an intended piece where I simply swapped the 22ga out for 20ga and kept the oval bead, since my relationship with 22ga isn't a good one, but I'm curious to know about the above.

Also, it's worth noting in regard to not changing lengths of wire, if we change the gauge of a base wire (as the legitimate swap), rather than the bead, the difference in the total overall wire used can be quite large, given that you're losing wire on every wrap around a diameter of wire, rather than catering for the length of a base wire around the circumference of the bead or cab.

Only the gauge of one of the materials listed may be changed. So either the base wire or the weaving wire.

I noticed it said that entries are due Friday August 22. August 22nd is a Monday. Can you please clarify the date?
Thank you. Anxiously awaiting my correct size beads in the mail.

It's the 22nd. I've removed the Friday (left over from a previous contest that I thought I deleted lol)

Your instructions only use the oval bead, 6 22 g wires and the 28 g weave wire. Does that mean that all other materials can be changed or eliminated? I'm basing this on your answer above.."Yep..after those included steps.." If I change an unused material, can I swap a wire for a metal shape (for example)?
I think I want to change the length of the 28 g, but if I use other materials on the list, but not used in your initial steps, are they permitted any changes?

You can eliminate any materials not used in the instruction Amma that doesn't influence the one item you can change. But all unused items can't be changed. Only one item from the materials list cam be changed.

Hi Nicole!

Can the focal bead be any shape of stone, shell, or druzy crystal etc, just as long as it still stays 25mm?

Hi Meaghan! The bead is listed as a 25mm oval, and you can change either the shape or the size, keeping in mind that if you make a change to the bead you cannot change any other materials in the list (aside from eliminating entirely anything not used in the included direction). I look forward to seeing your entry!

Hi Nicole,
I have wanted to have a go at this challange, but unfortunately, here in the UK the wire gauges are different and can not get the sizes you have stated, and as i am only allowed one change and would have to change both wire gauges. I think i will give it a try, but obviously not enter the comp xx

That's okay! Just use the nearest comparable size and it wont count against you as your change.
