  • Wire Weaving: Entry must be constructed, primarily, of wire weaving techniques.
  • Cabochons & Un-drilled Gemstones: Wire wrapped or woven cabochons and/or un-drilled gemstones.

Submission:
  • Entry deadline is June 15, 2016.

  • Submit ONE entry photo to nikki.hanna@gmail.com, with subject line "Contest Entry: Your Name & Category" (ie, "Contest Entry: Nicole Hanna, Mixed Media").
  • Please re-size photos to no more than 800 pixels, save the image file as "your name, category" (ie, Nicole Hanna, Mixed Media) and send as an attachment (not embedded in the email).  Following these submission guidelines assures your entry is not missed! A good, clear image is highly recommended. Note: Photoscape and Picasa are both free programs suitable for image re-sizing and photo editing. Photo editing apps for smart phones and tablets, such as "Resize Me!", can be used as well.
  • Once a photo is submitted, the submission may not be withdrawn or replaced, so be sure your are happy with your entry!

Failure to follow these rules and submission guidelines may disqualify you from the contest.

Judging & Voting:
  • An album has been created on Pinterest which will contain the submitted entries, for viewing. Entries will be added to the Pinterest board as they are received. This board may be found here.
  • I will pick my top three favorite entries from each category, on which (only) participants may cast their votes. This is a peer-to-peer voting format. The top three entries from each category will be posted within a blog post on Nicole Hanna Jewelry for final voting.
  • Participants may vote by commenting on the voting blog post with the name of their favorite in each category (comment: "Name, Category"). Only one vote per person, per category. In the event of a tie, I will choose the winner.
  • What entries are judged on: Innovation: A new technique or combination of techniques, unique or out-of-the-box designs, multi-purpose or convertible jewelry (a brooch to pendant), and jewelry that embodies the idea of wearable art! Execution: Regardless of design, execution is the goal! Clean lines, finished ends, no tool marks and even weaves are just some examples of the importance of execution in the wire wrapping and weaving world. Presentation: Clean and clear photos.

Note: By submitting an entry to the 2016 Design Challenge, you are granting Nicole Hanna permission to display your image online for the purposes of promoting or running this contest.

Wow, fantastic idea and amazing prizes! I'm excited to see the entries!
I do have one question:
Can we watermark our photo?
I'm not a big fan of having my photos not watermarked, but for the purpose of a contest, I could see it ensuring or at least making an attempt at anonymity so there's no "popularity' contest.
Thanks! :)

You can watermark. I'll be listing names with all the entries when it's time to vote anyway, after I pick out my three favs in each category.

Mixed media is basically mixing wire work with other mediums, like beading, bead embroidery, soutache (which is like ribbons), kumihimo, metal smithing, etc.

I have 1 question, Can I make 1 item that is and mixed media, and wire wrapping and with cabochons? :)
Because I would love to give that a try, not sure if it will work and if I get the time though but I will try to join in this time,

You can definitely do mixed media with cabochons, but can only enter once into one category, so just use your best judgement on which category it might be better suited towards.

I'd love to participate mainly for the sake of it because these prizes are not much of an incentive for me. Offering a choice of your tutorials was, in my opinion, a much MUCH bigger incentive. I shall still very much look forward to all the creativity that will be on display.

This sounds awesome... and scary. I do so love the wire weaving you do and I intend to do the Art Retreat only because I want to see how you do the wire wrapping of cabochons. I love how they look very elegant and classy. Since only one picture is allowed, would you prefer/suggest a close up picture showing more detail, or a picture showing the item being worn? Thanks for this opportunity!

I hope you enjoy the art retreat! They've already released a couple videos (mine is in March), and you'll have access to all those when you sign up.

I think I'd prefer a close up picture that shows all the nice details of the piece.

With regard to the wire weaving category may the weaving contain a large glass bead? I am caught up on the word "primarily." I have been working on a piece that is 1 very large bead enhanced by wire weaving.

I am just starting to do wire work to add to my beads and metalsmithing. Could you tell me what the difference is between wire weaving and wire wrapping?

I thought I replied directly to you, but I don't think it did. So I'll post again, just to be sure. You'll have to copy and paste the links, because they didn't seem to want to activate when I posted them.

Ultimately, wire weaving is a subset of wire wrapping, but some traditional examples would probably be best in describing the difference between wire weaving and wrapping.

I am new to this just kept practicing and your designs have helped so much, if I get time am I allowed to make my (stone)? from resin.

I actually started with wire from being asked to enamel paint some coins to go into walking sticks! Just shows how things spiral. haha

Thank you for your reply. I am just a bit concerned my efforts are not so refined as yours. But I will give it a go. I'm still using old tools and an anvil in the farm yard outside!

I have gained inspiration from yourself and Abby Hook, Cindy Wimmer and firstly Susan Lenart Kazmer and basically turn my doodles into wire work, I will certainly have a go. Thank you for sharing your work.

Wow Nicole, Thanks for this opportunity!
I'm not just a newbie, I've never finished a piece, only practiced with straight wire! I'd love to give it a try anyhow, but I'm headed to Mayo in June. I'm thinking of taking my wire with me, I can wrap sitting in bed right!?
My entry would be the big question, but most of my work ends up being mixed media, though I'd like to try something in undrilled Cab/gemstone.
Can I use mixed metals in the mixed media?
I saw there's also an August and November "Finish it" date on the contest page. It probably makes more sense for me to try and get an entry done for November :D
Can you please let me know more about those dates? What are those contests about? Will they be like this one?
I wish that I'd seen this a couple of months earlier :D But I'm so happy to have found your site thanks to the mention in SRAJD's facebook page I'm not complaining.
I can't wait to see more, the entries so far are wonderful and very inspiring!

Nicole Hanna

You can definitely use mixed media in your entry!

The Finish It contests are based on a half-finished tutorial I provide... you follow the instructions I provide but then have to finish the piece in your own way. Usually there's a tutorial prize pack and bragging rights. lol. I haven't finalized the dates for those yet, so they are still pending.

There is not much to go on in the north of England, so its good we have you Nicole and people like you. I see now how presentation of the photograph is as important as the piece itself, need help!
