Okay. I don't just love these contests, I need them. I need the seriously crazy talent, the individual voice, the unique method of moving the layers to create an unbelievable finished piece of art. I need what you've all so generously given in order to reinvigorate my own creative process. As the contest progressed, I felt myself filling up with a really incredibly passion for wire wrapping. It was, in a word, inspiring. View the GALLERY OF ENTRIES here. I received 50 amazing entries and am reminded, as always, of the ability to transform a standard set of instruction into a representation of the artist. Ahem, 50 different artists, mind you. And as each entry arrived in my email, I wished I'd been the one to create it. I fell into each design so easily and wrapped myself in the natural pull towards the art of wire wrapping. You guys gave that to me, whether or not with intent, and I'm eternal grateful. And now I bet your wondering who the winners are, right? Well, the Group Favorite was voted on by each participant in the contest, who cast a single vote on another entry. And the winner of the Group Favorite is Olga Jones, who will win $25 payable via PayPal, my version of the "Finish It!" design, and three tutorials of her choice. The Judged Favorite is chosen by a panel of 7 judges who are not participating in the contest.... myself included. These judges are wire wrappers and consumers, and were quite vocal in their choice. The Judged Favorite winner is Kay Newman, who will win $25 payable via PayPal and any three tutorials of her choice. Winners, please contact me at nikki.hanna@gmail.com with either your physical address (for the Group Favorite) and PayPal email address.
I hope everyone will visit the gallery of entries and congratulate the winners and entrants for creating some truly masterful pieces of jewelry. I should be having another design challenge (not a "Finish It!") in October, so keep an eye out for updates. I hope to see all of you artists enter in future contests. And thank you so much for filling my days with beauty! Nicole Wow. There's honestly not a lot more that needs to be said regarding the content I received as entries into the July "Finish It!" Design Challenge, but I'm totally going to say more....
Just about 50 folks took it upon themselves to prove to me that designing is intrinsically personal, that you can all begin from the same technique, or series of techniques, and end up with completely original creations. Not just original, but Ah-May-Zing. And so many were new to weaving, which blows my mind. To say that I am lucky to have viewed these entries as they were submitted is an understatement, because I've had, in some cases, three weeks to ogle these fantastic creations and find my own artistic voice strengthened as a result. And now it's time to share the entries with everyone! If you submitted an entry, but do not see it listed in the gallery, please email me at nikki.hanna@gmail.com with your entry as soon as possible, and it will be added immediately upon receipt. The gallery of entries will be available for viewing… well… indefinitely or, at the very least, until Pinterest falls into the dark abyss of the internet, at which point the images will (hopefully) be moved to another file sharing system. View the GALLERY OF ENTRIES here. The gallery of entries will be available for VOTING, however, through midnight, August 7, 2015. Voting is open only to those who participated in the contest. To vote, simply follow the link and comment “VOTED” beneath the image of your choice. One vote per participant only, please. If you are not a member of Pinterest or, for any reason, cannot comment, please email me your choice at nikki.hanna@gmail.com and I will vote on your behalf. A note to non-participating viewers and commentators…. please reserve the term “VOTED” for participants only, to avoid confusion during the judging process, but do feel free to comment as a show of appreciation for the beautiful work submitted. These entries are worthy of the recognition they receive and then some. On August 8, votes will be tallied and the “Group Favorite” (most voted by participants) will win my completed version of this project, any three tutorials of their choice, and $25, deliverable via PayPal. In the case of a tie, I will place the deciding vote. Also, a “Judged Favorite”, chosen by a panel of four jewelry artists and three “consumers” (who are not participating in the contest), will also receive any three tutorials of their choice and $25 payable via PayPal Every contestant should have receive the finished version of this tutorial as a thank you for his or her participation, within 24-48 hours upon submission of their entry. This was sent as a reply to your submission. If you have not received the tutorial, please check your spam folder. If you have trouble accessing the file, please contact me at nikki.hanna@gmail.com Thank you all so much! This has been an amazing experience, as always, to see the entries as they trickle into my email. I have looked forward to each entry over these last three weeks, and was continuously amazed by the creativity and craftmanship. You are amazing! I am already looking forward to the next contest (which will, ahem, hopefully be in October). Happy weaving everyone! Nicole It’s that time again! Time for the “Finish It!” tutorial contest. A little bit of life got in the way of the (originally planned) April contest, and I was forced to postpone it, but I'm finally ready! Here you’ll find all you need to know about the contest and rules, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the comments below, or email me at the address provided later in the rules.
The purpose of this challenge is to encourage the participants to extend themselves, their talents and creativity, beyond the limitations of a single set of instructions and create pieces uniquely their own. Each contest has resulted in a wealth of beautiful and original artistic expressions, and I expect this one will produce no less the amount of brilliance. You have all amazed me with, not only your exuberance and enthusiasm, but your results as well, and I’m excited to see what this contest will inspire within you. Here’s the gist: At the bottom of this post is a link to a tutorial only 8 pages long, and ending abruptly halfway through the instruction. Your job is to create a piece beginning with the steps, as explained in the file, but ending with your own imagination! And blowing my mind... that's part of your job too. And you can do it, because it's been done every single time I've held one of these contests. If you are in doubt... just you wait... you'll surprise yourself. Contest Rules
A “Judged Favorite”, chosen by a panel of four jewelry artists and three “consumers” (who are not participating in the contest), will also receive any three tutorials of their choice, and $25, deliverable via PayPal. Every contestant will receive the finished version of this tutorial simply for participating. This tutorial will arrive as a reply to your submission email, within 24 hours of entry into the contest, so check your spam folder if you do not receive it within this time frame. Also, be sure your email host will accept incoming attachments. I've had many emails rejected (especially from AOL and hotmail accounts) because the mail box was full, or security settings do not allow attachments. Happy weaving everyone, and I hope you have fun! Note: Please access this file via a laptop or desktop computer. Some mobile devices are uncooperative with PDF downloads (I'm looking at you, iPad!), and I may not be able to address requests for manual email delivery of this file in a timely manner (thus using up your submission time). Well it’s that time once again, to round out another Finish It! Design Challenge. And this one produced pieces as beautiful as expected, and then stretched the boundaries of that beauty into something even greater. I am always reminded, when I host these contests, of the endless sea of creativity which comes rolling in a roaring tide of beauty and inspiration. Thank you all so much for participating. Thank you for endeavoring to support one another with encouraging words and thank you, most of all, for the unending, exquisite work. On a personal note, given my various unwelcome discomforts during the month of October, this contest has been a blissful distraction for me, and I very much appreciate each of you for allowing me an opportunity to escape into a world of delightful innovation. You have all shown a unique perspective and character that clearly represents your individual artistic styles and have entertained me beyond measure! But enough gushing and onto the winners! Group Favorite: Tim Whetsel! Congrats Tim! You win $25 (payable via PayPal), my piece completed from the tutorial, and five tutorials of your choice. Please email me (nicole@nicolehannajewelry.com) your address and your choice of tutorials. Judged Favorite: Chosen by a group of seven judges (four jewelry artists and three consumers, myself included), the winner is Erica Teeter! Congrats Erica! You win five tutorials of your choice. Please email me (nicole@nicholehannajewelry.com) with your choice of tutorials. View the entire GALLERY OF ENTRIES here! Now this is not to say that every piece wasn’t absolutely stunning, because judging was as difficult as its ever been, and rightfully so. I love hosting these competitions and am warmed by the knowledge that those of you who enter and those of you who comment and support the entrants enjoy taking part and sharing your gifts and talents. I look forward to hosting another one soon and hope to see you all enter again. Thank you and happy weaving, you wonderful humans! Nicole On October 16, 2014
Okay, you are all kinda blowing my mind. There were over 50 entries, and you’d never know, by the looks of them (fabulous looks, I might add) they were derived from the same steps and list of materials. Tutorials are a great exercise for expanding creativity by choosing the directions by which you adhere. Or not! The point, as you have all eloquently proven, is that anything is possible. More than 50 unique entries, by more than 50 talented ladies and gentlemen, and I couldn’t be happier to have had the opportunity to view them. The participants have pushed themselves beyond their perceived limits, and proven to themselves, hopefully, they are artisans among the best of them. At any rate, you are to me. For participants and casual observers alike, the gallery of entries can be found here. If you submitted an entry, but do not see it listed in the gallery, please email me at nikki.hanna@gmail.com with your entry as soon as possible, and it will be added immediately upon receipt. It’s that time again! Time for the “Finish It!” design challenge! Past time, actually, as I let myself become distracted by all the amazing fall television previews (can we say Sleepy Hollow). But, I promised a contest in September and I aim to deliver! A “Judged Favorite”, chosen by a panel of four jewelry artists and three “consumers” (who are not participating in the contest), will also receive any three tutorials of their choice. Every contestant will receive the finished version of this tutorial simply for participating. So it’s a basketful of goodness, and all you have to do is try. Please note: Awards may change. First off, I’d like to apologize again for the Flickr kerfuffle, and to those who didn’t receive the finished tutorial in as timely a manner as I’d intended. Though I’m loathe to lay blame… I’m totally blaming Yahoo. And second, I’d like to thank you! Each and every one of you. Those who participated took a (rather confounding) set of instructions and turned them into unique and beautiful representations of the artist. Each had a voice so unique and so rewarding, that impressed is hardly a large enough word to use. And to the audience who supported the artists with comments and encouragement, thanks to you as well! Many of us create or continue to create as a result of the feedback and enthusiasm shown us. I am always humbled and amazed by the talents I witness through others during these contests. Not that I expect less from each of you, but that I expect more of myself as a result. Your works inspire me to pick up my tools and materials when I least feel like doing so. And, on a personal note, with a continuous barrage of health complications this past month, I was allowed a blissful escape via the art you’ve chosen to share with me. Thank you. You have been my oasis. Now on to the voting! I tallied up comments left on both Pinterest images and here on the blog, among which two artists stood out as clear favorites, in both the group and judged votes. With that said, I’d like to take a moment to stress that each entry was beautiful. Not only beautiful, but full of life. And despite the ease with which some of you completed your entry, and the frustration with which others did so, I enjoyed viewing each piece equally. The journey of the artist reveals itself in every turn of the wire and it’s a lovely path to walk. So, without further ado, let’s get to it. The winners are: Group Favorite: Adrienne Atadero who wins $25 (payable via PayPal), the finished tutorial piece (pictured above) and 10 tutorials of her choice. To claim your prize, please email me with your physical address, PayPal ID and choice of tutorials, at nikki.hanna@gmail.com. Judged Favorite: Judy Larson who wins 10 tutorials of her choice. To claim your prize, please email me your choice of tutorials, at nikki.hanna@gmail.com. Thank you again everyone! View the entire GALLERY OF ENTRIES here! Happy weaving! Nicole On June 16, 2014
So many beautiful entries. What else is there to say really? I could receive five entries or 500 and each alone would have been worth hosting another contest. Your creativity and ability to extend yourselves beyond the limitations of a tutorial are, as always, extremely impressive and inspiring. I want to thank each and every one of you for participating, supporting the idea of this contest and perfectly exemplifying what it means to not be defined by the “rules”. You are masters of your own mind and ingenuity and I hope, at the very least, you enjoyed experimenting, which is, at the end of the day, all we need to expect of ourselves. A fear of failure does not negate the importance of the effort, and you each have obviously made each effort count. BRAVO! View the entire GALLERY OF ENTRIES here! The gallery of entries will be available for VOTING, however, through June 22, 2014. Voting is open only to those who participated in the contest. This helps assure votes remain fair and unbiased and stray as far as possible from the ever present “popularity contests” so prevalent on social media these days. If you are a participant, you may vote by commenting below with the name of the entry (located beneath each image). Now this doesn’t mean I wouldn’t love to see comments and supports from the creative community as a whole. I encourage anyone to visit this gallery and oggle the amazing entries and share your appreciation for the work submitted. Each piece is worth the recognition it receives, and then some. On June 23, votes will be tallied and the “Group Favorite” (most voted by participants) will win my completed version of this project, any ten tutorials of their choice, and $25, deliverable via PayPal. In the case of a tie, I will place the deciding vote. Also, a “Judged Favorite”, chosen by a panel of four jewelry artists and three “consumers” (who are not participating in the contest), will also receive any ten tutorials of their choice. Every contestant should have already received the finished version of this tutorial as a thank you for his or her participation. If you have not received the tutorial, or have trouble accessing the file, please contact me at nikki.hanna@gmail.com I wish I could give everyone a cash prize. They were all so worthy. And I do hope to provide larger cash prizes in future contests…. just because. Thank you all so much! You make “coming to work” every day perfectly perfect! Happy weaving everyone!
